SPANISH AT THE UBA


The Language Laboratory is the only official language teaching center of the University of Buenos Aires (UBA). Since 1986 the institution has a Spanish Program that enables students to learn Spanish as a second language in an academic and multilingual environment.


The Program

The Spanish Program offers courses for students at all levels, ranging from those with no previous experience in Spanish to advanced level studies.

All courses develop Speaking, Writing, Reading and Listening skills. The courses range from basic grammar fundamentals that are necessary for beginner communication activities to advanced, reading, speaking, and academic writing. Proficiency at all levels can be measured and compared to ACTFL and MCER scales, as shown below:

PLACEMENT TEST: The test consists of two parts: a written exam, followed by a teacher-student interview. Students are required to take both parts before they can be assigned to the apropriate level.


Courses

Classes are comprised of small groups (up to 12 students) for a duration of one, two or four months.

  • Four-month courses: four months. Four hours a week. Registration: late March and late August.
  • Two-month courses: two months. Eight hours a week. Registration: late March, mid-May, late August and mid-October.
  • Summer & winter courses: one month. Fifteen hours a week. Registration: early January, early February and early July.

 

Special courses

  • Spanish classes for eastern language speakers: classes especially designed for those students whose mother tongues vary greatly from Spanish in phonology, grammar and lexical features, like Chinese, Japanese, Indian, among others.
  • Courses for specific purposes: intermediate and advanced students can take the following courses: literature, academic Writing, academic Speech, phonetics, latin American History and Culture, cinema, among others
  • Tailor made courses: designed and organized to meet the needs of specific groups of students

 

Instructors

Highly trained and experienced instructors work with the classes at all levels. All instructors have BAs from the UBA or other institutions and have further certification in Spanish language teaching.

Certificates

All courses conclude with final oral an written exams. If passed, an official certificate from the University of Buenos Aires is granted, indicating level, hours and grade

COURSES SECOND TERM 2018


 

First step:

 

All students willing to enroll for our courses must take a placement test. On arrival at our center, we will assess you with a writing test and an oral interview to make sure you are placed in the aprropriate class for your Spanish level. Placement tests are held during enrollment days.

If you want to save time, you can bring forward the placement test by taking it online here. Later, however, you need to come personally to the institution in order to have an oral interview that will complete this placement test.


Where:

 

After your placement test, and in order to get enrolled, you have to complete a registration form and pay the fee for the course in advance. Most courses of Spanish for Foreigners are taught at the Microcentro branch (25 de Mayo 221, two blocks away from Plaza de Mayo), though there are also some workshops and /or courses at the Caballito branch (Puan 480) and the Palermo branch (Armenia 1353).enia 1353).

SPANISH CERTIFICATION


The Spanish program offers Spanish as a second or foreign language certification for students who choose to take the exam for professional or academic purposes. Certifications available are CEB, CEI and CEA (Certificate in Basic, Intermediate and Advanced Spanish)
